FARM-113

Our farm is situated on 10 treed acres in Black Forest, Colorado. The property had a partially finished house and  a 30×60 pole barn when we purchased it in 2007. There was a smooth wire fence on one side of the property and a bunch of rusty broken down barbed-wire fences on the other three sides.

Our first project was to build a chicken coop in the barn and an enclosed chicken run outside the barn. Next we needed a stall and shelter for our soon to arrive three week old beef calf. The following summer we really got “the bug” and decided we would fence the entire property. After about a month (and several pairs of gloves) of pulling barbed-wire out of the weeds, we began fencing the entire perimeter of the property with 47″ field fence. We then began fencing the interior paddocks with 5 wire high tensile smooth fencing  that we eventually electrified. By the end of that summer we had pulled 32,000 feet of wire and fence.

In 2010, we built our first greenhouse. It was a 12×24 ClearSpan Round Cold Frame from Farmtek. We were so amazed at what we were able to grow, that  in 2011 we purchased another used cold frame that was 20×130. We cleared additional land and built two 20×40 greenhouses. Both were setup for four season production using Eliot Coleman’s Four Season Gardening layouts as a guide.

For 2012, we are planning on adding a heated milking parlor, enlarged chicken coop in the barn that accommodates 300 chicks/pullets over the winter, water and power to the greenhouses, an additional pasture for our pigs and in ground water supply for our grazing livestock and chickens.

We would love to have you out to the farm and show you around!
